A voyage through the Strait of Magellan, one of the most scenic waterways in the world, is an exhilarating experience which offers the traveler extraordinary sights of untamed natural beauty.

STRAIT OF MAGELLAN:
AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE

For such a small geographic area, the Strait of Magellan has attracted the attention of a host of world-renowned scientists and explorers.

Captain James Cook in 1769 landed here to allow his botanists to collect plant samples. In 1829 the first U.S. Exploring Expedition described the natural history of the region, and included the compilation of the first rock and fossil collection. In that same year Captain Robert Fitzroy made the first detailed navigational charts. Three years later Charles Darwin sailed with Captain Fitzroy as the (unpaid) naturalist aboard The Beagle.

Modern geologists recognize the Strait of Magellan as a sliding plate boundary between the South American lithospheric plate and the Scotia lithosperic plate. This major fault can be traced more than 1500 miles eastward to the Sandwich Islands.

The broken and fragmented rocks within the fault zone were scoured during the recent glaciation 18,000 years ago, and today is the site of one of the deepest fjords in the world with waters depths exceeding 1600 feet.
