ALGUNAS PARTICULARIDADES DEL VERBO GET ...

En principio es importante aclarar que en Estados Unidos se utiliza GOTTEN como participio pasado del verbo GET. En cambio, los británicos prefieren usar GOT. Analizaremos ahora algunas particularidades de este verbo y para entendernos mejor recuerda que la abreviatura STH significa something, algo/alguna cosa, y SB significa somebody, alguien:

TO GET + SUSTANTIVO o PRONOMBRE

Básicamente, GET significa: recibir, conseguir, obtener. Ejemplos: to get a shock, llevarse un susto; to get a letter, recibir una carta; How much did you get for your car?, ¿Cuánto te dieron por el auto?; She gets bad headaches, Sufre fuertes dolores de cabeza; I didn't get the joke, No capté el chiste.

TO GET + OBJETO + INFINITIVO o ING

To get sth/sb doing sth/to do sth, hacer o conseguir que algo/alguien haga algo. Ejemplos: I need to get the car to start, Necesito hacer que el auto arranque; I will get him talking, Lo voy a hacer hablar.

TO GET + OBJETO + PARTICIPIO

Esta función del verbo GET se utiliza con actividades que queremos que sean realizadas por otra persona para nosotros. Ejemplos: to get your hair cut, cortarse el cabello; You should get your watch repaired, Deberías llevar tu reloj a arreglar.

TO GET + OBJETO + ADJETIVO

En esta estructura gramatical GET expresa conseguir que algo se vuelva o haga. Ejemplos: to get sth right, acertar algo; to get the children ready for school, preparar a los chicos para la escuela; to get (yourself) ready, arreglarse o prepararse para salir.

TO GET + ADJETIVO

Aquí significa volverse, hacerse. Ejemplos: to get wet, mojarse o empaparse (lluvia, etc.); It's getting late, Se está haciendo tarde; Drink your coffee. It's getting cold, Bebe tu café. Se está enfriando; I'm getting hungry, Estoy teniendo hambre; Martha's getting better already, Marta está recuperándose.

TO GET + PARTICIPIO

Se usa en expresiones cotidianas como: to get fed up with sth, hartarse o cansarse de algo; to get used to sth/sb, acostumbrarse a algo o alguien.

PARA TENER EN CUENTA
Algunas combinaciones frecuentes de GET + PARTICIPIO se traducen por verbos pronominales: to get bored, aburrirse; to get divorced, divorciarse; to get dressed, vestirse; to get drunk, emborracharse; to get lost, perderse; to get married, casarse; to get tired, cansarse. Para conjugarlos añadimos la forma correspondiente de GET: She soon got used to it, Enseguida se acostumbró; I'm getting dressed, Me estoy vistiendo; We'll get married in the summer, Nos vamos a casar este verano.
