Cambios en el vecindario

Esta sección, dividida en tres diálogos, presenta opiniones acerca de cambios ocurridos en tres barrios. Escucha con atención y trata de repetir luego los tres diálogos.

Mark:

How long have you been living here?

¿Cuánto tiempo has estado
viviendo aquí?

Ellen:

Oh, for over twenty years.

Oh, durante más de veinte años. 

Mark:

And have you noticed a
lot of changes during that
time?

¿Y has notado muchos
 cambios durante ese 
tiempo?

Ellen:

Oh, yes. Quite a few. This
is a much nicer place to 
live now than it used to be.
It's much greener. When 
I first moved here, there
weren't many trees around.
But, over the last few years,
the city has planted trees
everywhere. It's made 
such a difference!!

Oh, sí. Unos cuantos. Este es 
un lugar mucho más agradable para vivir ahora que lo que solía ser. Es mucho más verde. Cuando me mudé aquí por primera vez, no había muchos árboles en los alrededores. Pero, en los últimos años, la ciudad ha plantado árboles por todas partes. ¡¡Es tan diferente!!

No decent bus service   Sin un servicio de autobuses adecuado

Linda:

How do you like living here?

¿Te gusta vivir aquí?

Paul:

Well, it's an interesting city, but you really need a car here. Otherwise you can't go anywhere. There used 
to be a good bus system, but there isn't anymore. 

Bueno, es una ciudad interesante pero realmente necesitas auto aquí. De otro modo no puedes ir a ninguna parte. Solía haber un buen sistema de autobuses pero ya no existe más.

Linda:

Why is that?

¿Por qué ocurre eso?

Paul:

Oh, I think they expect everyone to have a car, so they don't bother to provide decent bus service. It's getting worse and worse. These days you have to
wait for ages for a bus and when one finally shows up, it's usually full!!

Oh, creo que esperan que 
todos tengamos auto y 
entonces no se molestan en 
dar un servicio de autobuses adecuado. Empeora cada día más. En estos momentos tienes que esperar siglos por un autobús y cuando finalmente aparece uno, ¡¡está generalmente repleto!!

Too quiet around here   Demasiado silencioso por aquí 

Judy:

I can't believe how much this neighborhood's changed!! 

¡¡No puedo creer cuánto
ha cambiado este barrio!!

Lisa:

What do you mean? 

¿A qué te refieres?

Judy:

Well, when Joe and I first
bought this house - that 
was almost twenty years
ago, of course - there were
lots of young couples with
little children living on this
street. 

Bueno, cuando Joe y yo compramos esta casa
- eso fue hace casi veinte 
años, por supuesto - había
muchas parejas jóvenes con 
hijos pequeños viviendo 
en esta calle.

Lisa:

I don't see any kids up today.

No observo ningún chico 
por aquí hoy

Judy:

That's because they've all
grown up and moved out 
of their parents' houses.
Just about the only young
children you see around
here these days are the
grandchildren when they
come to visit. It's a shame!!
I miss the sounds of kids
playing. It's got too quiet
around here.

Eso ocurre porque todos 
ellos han crecido y se han 
ido de las casa de sus padres. 
Los únicos niños pequeños 
que ves alrededor hoy en 
día son los nietos cuando 
vienen de visita. ¡¡Es una 
pena!! Extraño el sonido 
de los chicos jugando. 
Se ha puesto demasiado
silencioso por aquí.

notice = observe (notar, observar, detectar)
changes = alterations, modifications (cambios, modificaciones)
quite a few = a considerable number (uan cantidad apreciable)
green + er = greener (más verde, comparativo del adjetivo "green")
How do you like...? = Do you really like...? (¿Te gusta realmente?)
otherwise = in other way (de otro modo, de no ser así)
anymore = any longer (ya no, expresando tiempo)
bother = worry, annoy (preocuparse, molestarse en)
provide = give, supply (dar, entregar, proveer)
decent = adequate, in good order (adecuado, decente, en condiciones)
show up = become visible (aparecer, hacerse visible)
full =/= empty (lleno =/= vacío)
grow up = become an adult (crecer, hacerse adulto)
move out = leave your old house (dejar la casa de los padres)
grandson (nieto); granddaughter (nieta); grandchildren (nietos) 
It's a shame!! = It's a pity!! (¡¡Es una lástima!!; ¡¡Es una pena!!)
miss = suffer from the lack (extrañar, sufrir la ausencia de)

¡¡ Qué opiniones tan diferentes, ¿no? !!
