Dividida en tres partes, esta sección presenta profesionales que utilizan computadoras en sus ocupaciones. Escucha con atención e intenta repetir luego lo que dicen.

Ms. Watson:

My name is Sandy Watson and I'm a police officer. 
I analyze crime patterns. 
In other words, my job is
to use the computer to try to guess when a crime 
will probably happen in 
a neighborhood. I can 
also find out the kind of crime and who the
criminal might be. I start with a map of the neighborhood on the computer which shows where crimes have happened in the past. Then, I put into the computer all the information we have 
about criminals: their addresses, the crimes
they committed in the
past ... that sort of thing. Then, the computer will figure out when the criminal is likely to 
commit a crime, 
where and when.

y soy agente de policía. Analizo tendencias delictivas. En otras palabras, mi tarea es utilizar la computadora para intentar calcular cuando
sucederá probablemente 
un delito en un barrio.
Puedo inclusive enterarme del tipo de delito y quién podría ser el delincuente. Comienzo con un mapa del barrio en la computadora que muestra donde han sucedido delitos en el pasado. Luego ingreso en la computadora toda la información que tenemos sobre delincuentes: sus domicilios, los delitos que han cometido en el pasado ... ese tipo de cosa. el delincuente cometerá probablemente un delito, dónde y cuándo.

Dr. Hunt:

My name is Alex Hunt 
and I'm a psychotherapist. I help people change their
behaviors. There are
people who have all kinds
of fears, like a fear of
heights, or a fear of
leaving the house, or 
even a fear of dogs. I use
a computer filled with
virtual reality equipment, 
a special kind of visor 
you wear over your eyes
so that you think you are
really in a different place.
You see things that the
computer shows you,
and you think that 
things are real. For example, when I treat someone who is afraid 
of heights, the patient 
puts on the virtual reality rig, and I can train them 
to think they're looking down from a very high balcony or riding a
49-floors in a glass-walled elevator on a side of a building. After a while,
they get used to the
feeling and they can 
deal with real heights
when they go out into 
the real world. 

Me llamo Alex Hunt y soy psicoterapeuta. Ayudo a 
la gente a modificar sus comportamientos. Hay
gente que tiene todo tipo de temores, como miedo a las
alturas, o temor a salir de
la casa, o incluso temor a
los perros. Utilizo una
computadora equipada con
equipo de realidad virtual,
un tipo de visor especial
que se usa sobre los ojos
de modo que uno realmente
cree encontrarse en un lugar diferente. Usted ve cosas
que le muestra la
computadora y cree que
 las cosas son reales. Por

una torre de 49 pisos en un ascensor con paredes de vidrio en una lateral de edificio. Después de un tiempo, se acostumbra a la sensación y logra enfrentar alturas reales cuando sale 
al mundo real.

Ms. Brown:

My name is Janet Brown. 
I teach at a medical 
school and I use computers to cut down 
on my teaching tone.
Instead of lecturing to
students in a lecture 
hall, students go to a
computer learning 
center where lots of their
courses are on CD-ROM.
They can also log onto 
a database and review 
all they need to know about something 
instead of having to go 
to the library.      

Me llamo Janet Brown. Dicto clases en una escuela de medicina y utilizo computadoras para reducir 
el uso de mi voz al enseñar. En lugar de enseñar a los estudiantes en una aula magna, los estudiantes van
a un centro de aprendizaje computarizado donde muchos de sus cursos están en CD-ROM. También pueden acceder a una base datos y repasar todo lo que necesitan saber, sobre un tema en particular, en lugar de tener que ir a la biblioteca.

database = organized information (base de datos)
review = examine again (repasar, volver a estudiar)
