On 1 January 1993 frontiers between the 12 member states of the EU (European Union) came down, creating a single market which allowed the free movement of goods, money and people. To mark this, at midnight European leaders lit a chain of 1,300 beacons across the Union, from Athens in the east to the Azores in the west.
