PAPER 4: LISTENING

Your ability to understand spoken English is tested in Paper 4. The paper contains four parts, recorded on cassette or CD-ROM. The instructions are on both the question paper and the cassette or CD-ROM. There is a total of 30 questions.

Each of the four parts has a different listening task. This is a useful summary:

1

ANSWER A MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTION ON 8 EXTRACTS

Eight short extracts (approx. 30 seconds each), unrelated in subject matter, each containing one or two voices. Candidates have to answer one three-item multiple-choice question on each extract. The questions will focus on an understanding of different aspects of the general idea of the extracts (e.g. topic, content, place, identity of speaker, attitude and opinion of speaker, communicative intention of the speaker, etc).

2

FILL IN 10 BLANKS

One long text (approx. 3 minutes), with one or more speakers. Candidates have to complete a productive task (e.g. note-taking), by writing up to about three words in each space. The task will involve candidates in listening for specific factual information.

3

MATCH THE  RIGHT ANSWER TO 5 SHORT EXTRACTS

Five short extracts (approx. 30 seconds each), related in subject matter and number of speakers (e.g. all monologues, all dialogues). Candidates have to match an option (from a choice of six) to each extract. The task will focus on understanding the main idea of the extracts.

4

SELECT THE RIGHT ANSWER FROM 2 OR 3 POSSIBILITIES

One long text (approx. 3 minutes), with one or more speakers. Candidates have to do an objective task (e.g. True/False, Yes/No, multiple choice, matching). The task will involve candidates in listening for specific information, as well as speaker attitude and opinion.

BE PREPARED FOR ...

A VARIETY OF VOICES in terms of accents, speed of delivery and speaking styles.

A VARIETY OF SUBJECT MATTER: conversations, announcements, telephone messages and materials from the radio (reports, interviews, advertisements, etc).

A VARIETY OF TASK, particularly in Parts 2 and 4 candidates should always read the iinstructions carefully to understand what to do.

TIMING

The time given to candidates to look through the questions before the first listening is really important because:

You can see the task you have to perform and how you have to give your answers.

You can get an idea about what you are going to hear. You can start thinking about the subject, the person or people talking and the situation.

You can see what you have to listen for. This will help you concentrate on what is important and ignore what is not.

The whole paper takes about 40 minutes. At the end of the paper you will be given time to transfer your answers onto a special answer sheet.

FINAL ADVICE

Do not panic if you don't understand everything the first time. During the First Certificate exam, everything is heard twice, and in some cases you may not have to understand every single word to do the task.
