Around the city of Vienna are a few hundred of Heurigen or wine

taverns. Many are on the edge of the Vienna Woods at Grinzing.

Avoid these unless you do not mind in spending the evening with

coachloads of another tourists and sad-looking musicians with

3

accordians. Viennese people would rather to go to taverns which are

4

further away but at which you can rely on getting refreshing wine

5

and one simple but delicious food. My favourite is Sirbu, set in

6

the vineyard-covered hills of Vienna's nineteenth district. It is

7

best to go on a summer evening in slightly fine weather when you

8

can sit outside at her plain wooden tables underneath trailing

9

vines. A busy waitress in traditional costume will bring young

10

white wine served in jugs or by the glass, which tastes of best

11

mixed with sparkling mineral water. A range of simple dishes can be

12

picked yourself up at the counter inside: slices of roast pork,

13

roast chicken, cold vegetable salads, fresh radishes, tomatoes, and a

14

dark bread which can be eaten with cheese spiced with a garlic,

15

onion and paprika. I would like to finish off my meal with a piece of

apple strudel.
