Born in Milan in 1858, Puccini, although not as
prolific a composer as some others, wrote some of the most
popular operas ever. The outright favourite for lovers of
romantic verismo opera is La Boheme, set in
Paris, and tells the tale of the life and loves of a group of
poor students. The music is extremely easy to listen to and
contains some of the most delightful 'tunes' that opera has to
offer. A strange mixture of comedy and pathos, La Boheme
is always a Box-office certainty. Oh yes ... take a hanky! |

On a grander scale is Puccini's
oriental masterpiece, Turandot. Who has not heard the
great tenor aria, Nessun Dorma (None shall sleep tonight)?
Some of Puccini's greatest choruses and arias can be found in
this piece. It needs a first rate tenor and it is a rare soprano
that can carry off the vocal demands required. This is an opera
that lays itself open to spectacle of stunning proportion. |
