Notice how this verb can be used:

WRONG  ►   Ana smiled to Henry   or   Ana smiled Henry  

Fortune smiled on (upon) my sister when she won the lottery a year ago.
(La fortuna le sonrió a mi hermana cuando ganó la lotería un año atrás).

WRONG  ►   Fortune smiled to my sister   or   Fortune smiled my sister
