STEP 4

Grammar: Present Simple and Present Continuous

 

PRESENT SIMPLE

We use the present simple to talk about habitual actions, and things which are generally true.

 

-  She usually stays at the Hilton, but it was fully booked.
 -  Metals expand when heated.
 -  I make 5,000 dollars a month.

 

PRESENT CONTINUOUS

We use the present continuous to talk about something which is happening at or around the time of speaking.

 

-  Mr. Rosen is in Bogota at the moment. He's staying at the Marvin Hotel.
-  We're expanding our operations in the Far East.
 -  I'm making 5,000 dollars a month.

We use the present continuous to talk about temporary situations, and the present simple to talk about permanent situations.

 

-  I'm working in a bookshop during the summer holidays.
-  He works in the Personnel Department of a large multinational company.

Certain verbs are not normally used in the continuous form. For example, we say / know (not  I am knowing ) and I like (not  I am liking ). Common verbs of this type include:

VERBS OF FEELING

like, love, want, prefer, dislike, hate, appreciate

VERBS OF THINKING

know, believe, recognise, understand, forget, realise, think, remember, mean

VERBS OF SENSES

see, hear, taste, feel, smell

OTHER VERBS

belong, own, consist of, be, have (= possess), contain, include, exist

 

 

Grammar: Present Tenses with a Future Meaning

 

PRESENT SIMPLE

We use the present simple for the future when referring to timetables or programmes.

 

-  The meeting starts at 3 o'clock.
-  Our flight arrives at 6 p.m.

 

PRESENT CONTINUOUS

We use the present continuous to talk about future arrangements and plans.

 

-  I'm attending a meeting tomorrow afternoon.
-  We're flying to Buenos Aires next week.
