PRESTA ATENCION a los siguientes
pares de palabras: cold
y cool, hot y warm. Cold indica una temperatura más baja que
cool y muchas
veces desagradable: El nuestro fue un otoño muy frío. Ours was a
terribly cold autumn. Cool significa fresco más
que frío: En la calle está caluroso, pero aquí dentro está fresco.
It's hot on the road, but it's cool in here. Hot describe
una temperatura bastante más elevada que warm.
Warm es más bien cálido, templado, generalmente
sugiere agradables sensaciones. Veamos estos ejemplos: No puedo
beber este té, está muy caliente para mí. I can't drink this tea,
it's too hot for me; ¡Está muy caluroso en esta oficina! It's
too hot in this office! Entrarás en calor si vienes a la cocina.
You'll soon warm up if you come to the kitchen. |

Humid (jiúmid) y humidity (jiumíditi) se refieren a la humedad
atmosférica. Tanto moist (móist) como damp se
traducen por "húmedo"; damp es el término más frecuente y
tiene generalmente sentido negativo: Cielorrasos húmedos. Damp
ceilings; Tiempo frío y húmedo en California esta semana. Cold and damp weather in California this week. Finalmente
wet
(uét) se utiliza para expresar "mojado, empapado": Es una
habitación llena de agua. It's a wet room; Lucy se empapó
durante la tormenta. During the storm, Lucy got absolutely wet. |
