CAST OF CHARACTERS


MOTHER	DAD	TOM	DOROTHY (DOT)	FRED
38/43 years old	40/45 years old	about 14 years old	about 16 years old	about 17 years old

MOTHER	(to FRED) Where were you going?
TOM	To a drive-in movie with that new girl.
DOT	(referring to FRED's new girl) She bleaches her hair, you know.
FRED	She does not.
MOTHER	You want the car to date on a week night?
FRED	No! (very annoyed with TOM, he goes to him and musses his hair roughly) See what you started? Why don't you grow up?

MOTHER	Now, boys... (to FRED) What did you want the car for, Fred?
FRED	Well, it's a secret.
DOT	*It was her, though, wasn't it? As soon as you hung up you came in and asked Dad for the car.*
TOM	I don't go with girls who call me... I call them. I'm going to be the boss and make the decisions. No girl’s going to run my life.
FRED	Some boss! Every time you call a girl, she hangs up on you.
TOM	That's not so!
MOTHER	Let's not start again. Now, both of you, be quiet.
FRED	Look, Mom... I really need the car. Honest.
MOTHER	Don't you think you ought to tell us where you're going?
FRED	Can't you trust me? It's a surprise.
TOM	I bet... We were surprised that time you smashed the left fender, too.

FRED	Oh, forget it. I’ll go by taxi.
DAD	To a drive-in movie?
FRED	I told you. I'm not going to a movie.

DAD	Well, a taxi anywhere will be expensive.
FRED	I have to go, and you won't let me use the car.
DAD	All right. Then let's talk it over. What's so urgent?
MOTHER	He said it was a secret.
FRED	A surprise.
DAD	And you can't tell us what it is?
DOT	I'm going to use that technique the next time I want something.
DAD	(to DOT) I haven't said “Yes” yet.
MOTHER	Don't you think you could let him this time, Paul?
DAD	How long will you want it?
FRED	If I don't hurry, I won't need it at all. Grandma's at the station...
MOTHER	Grandma?!!!
